Members of the department serve in this capacity when severe weather threatens. This service, not only benefits local residents, but gives early warning to areas beyond Pomona. Service is conducted in close cooperation with local law enforcement, the office of emergency management, national weather service and other spotter networks. Pomona's warning sirens can be activated remotely from the 911 dispatch center or from the fire station. Members performing this function are required to attend training annually. The National Weather Service radio broadcasts can be received at 162.425, Halls Summit (recommended) and 162.475, Topeka. Pomona weather spotter's radio traffic can be monitored at 154.445 and on 155.835 on home scanners. June 17, 1978, a tornado capsized the Whipporwill Showboat on Pomona Lake which killed several people. Click the spinning tornado to view a slide show of that tornado. |
