AREA SERVED
Our service area comprises 94.68 square miles in northwest Franklin County Kansas including the townships of Appanoose, Greenwood, Pomona, South Centropolis plus the city of Pomona with a resident population of 2,900 with a total assessed valuation of $111,797,010.00 In addition, Pomona Fire shares mutual-aid assistance with Centroplois and Williamsburg/Homewood fire departments in Franklin County and Agency and Elk Townships in Osage County. Through mutual-aid, additional resources are readily available when the need arises.
Increased responsibility is incurred as nine miles of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad's double mainline tracks cut through the center of our service area one-half mile south of the city. On specified days in excess of one hundred trains run this route in twenty-four hours. Many with considerable cargos of hazardous materials.
The Wal-Mart Distribution Center located in Ottawa routes semi-trailer trucks along state highway
K-68, a narrow, two-lane roadway with little or no shoulder.
Three major, high-pressure pipelines pass through our area; all of which presents opportunity for responses to hazardous material incidents, major fire scenes and numerous vechile accidents.
